Transforming Lives in Memba: How Clean Water is Making a Difference in Mozambique

In a remote corner of Mozambique’s Nampula province, the once-strenuous daily tasks of gathering water have changed dramatically for families living in the Memba district. Just a few months ago, many residents trekked around five kilometers to fetch water from sources that were far from safe. Today, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative by World Vision, these families now have access to clean, safe water right at home, marking a significant shift in their quality of life.

A Community’s Journey Towards Clean Water

Dinis, a resident of Memba district, shares a poignant snapshot of the impact this change has had on his family’s health: “We used to get sick with diarrhea and go to the hospital often, but since we had clean water at home, we don’t get sick often.” His words encapsulate the critical role that clean water plays in mitigating health risks among communities that have lacked access to proper sanitation and hygiene facilities.

The implementation of World Vision’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project has transformed the lives of many in this remote area. With a small-scale water supply system in place, at least 17 households now enjoy the luxury of clean water supplied from taps within their homes. This innovative move has not only cut down the time families used to spend fetching water but has also facilitated other productive activities. Children, who once missed school to assist in the arduous task of water collection, are now free to focus on their education and play.

The Water Crisis in Mozambique

While improvements are evident, it’s vital to understand the broader context of the water crisis in Mozambique. According to WaterAID Mozambique, a staggering 46 percent of the population still lacks access to safe drinking water. The disparity is even more pronounced in rural areas, where only about 40 percent of households have basic access to water services, compared to 84 percent in urban centers, as highlighted by USAID.

World Vision’s efforts have been a beacon of hope in this disheartening landscape. They have built a solar-powered water system capable of storing 20,000 liters of water, which has the potential to serve up to 700 households. As of October 2024, 17 families enjoy the luxury of having water taps directly in their homes, and 539 additional households benefit from strategically positioned water supply points throughout the neighborhood.

A Commitment to the Community

The testimony of residents like Filomena further emphasizes the new normal that clean water has brought to Memba. She recalls: “Now things are normal. Before, we used to go to the river and then go to the farm; it would take us a lot of time. Now, we just store water for consumption, cooking, and bathing. We have more time to go to the mosque, the farm, and take care of our children.”

The convenience of having safe water readily available has allowed families to prioritize their health and well-being. Parents can devote more time to nurturing their children, while women now have the opportunity to engage in income-generating activities, thus contributing to the economic stability of their households.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Solutions

While the changes brought about by World Vision’s intervention are commendable, challenges still linger. Not every household in Memba currently has a water tap. Some residents continue to endure lengthy walks to access water from boreholes or communal distribution points. Moreover, the solar system, while innovative, does not provide water around the clock—especially during periods of heavy rain, when solar efficiency is compromised.

Recognizing these challenges, World Vision is steadfast in its commitment to improve access to clean water for all households in the community. Plans are underway to install additional water taps by the end of 2025, with a goal to reach at least 100 households and ensure access for over 700 families.
