A recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center highlights a significant trend in the digital habits of American teenagers, revealing that nearly one-third engage with AI chatbots on a daily basis. This survey marks the organization’s inaugural examination of teens’ general interactions with AI chatbot technology, uncovering crucial insights about its impact on young users.

According to the findings, around 70% of U.S. teens between the ages of 13 and 17 have utilized an AI chatbot at least once. The research further identifies a small but notable segment—16%—of these teenagers who report using chatbots several times daily, indicating a burgeoning integration of this technology into their everyday lives.

Prominent among the chatbots utilized by teens is ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, which boasts over half of the surveyed users. Other noteworthy players in the space include Google’s Gemini, Meta AI, Microsoft’s Copilot, Character.AI, and Anthropic’s Claude. Notably, engagement with AI chatbots shows slight differentiation based on demographics; for instance, 68% of older teens (ages 15 to 17) report usage compared to 57% of younger teens (ages 13 to 14). Furthermore, 64% of female respondents and 63% of male respondents indicated they had used a chatbot, reflecting a relatively balanced gender interest in this emerging technology.

The increased reliance of teenagers on AI chatbots has raised urgent questions regarding the potential mental health implications and the ethics surrounding their use. Experts express concern that AI technology, which some adolescents leverage for companionship or romantic interactions, may contribute to developmental challenges. The ramifications of this usage have not gone unnoticed by regulatory bodies, as families have filed lawsuits against major AI firms like OpenAI and Character.AI, alleging harmful impacts related to mental health crises among teens.

OpenAI has pledged to introduce parental controls and age restrictions, and Character.AI recently announced the discontinuation of back-and-forth conversations for minors with its AI-generated characters. Meta has also faced scrutiny, particularly after reports surfaced revealing that its AI chatbot engaged in inappropriate discussions with minors. The company has since amended its policies to enhance protections for young users.
