New Childcare Center Established Through Collaboration Between JWCC and PACT

Exciting New Childcare Center Coming to the Tri-States!

In an exciting development for local families, a new childcare center is set to open in the Tri-States region, thanks to a fruitful partnership between John Wood Community College (JWCC) and Parent and Child Together (PACT) for West Central Illinois. The JWCC Board of Trustees officially approved the plans during their regular meeting on Wednesday, paving the way for much-needed support for families in the area.

Filling a Critical Need

Childcare has increasingly become a significant barrier for many students, particularly those who are parents. JWCC College President Bryan Renfro highlighted this challenge, stating that a substantial number of the college’s students are adults juggling their education with the responsibilities of raising children. “Many of our students are parents, and we recognize that a lack of childcare can hinder their ability to start or complete their studies. This new center isn’t just about providing care; it’s about reshaping lives and ensuring access to education for all,” Renfro explained.

The benefits of this new facility reach far beyond just convenience. The partnership between JWCC and PACT aims to provide additional childcare seats to the community while offering a structured environment tailored to the needs of young children. This dual approach promises to create a more supportive ecosystem for both families and students at JWCC.

Key Features of the Childcare Center

The childcare program will cater to families with children up to three years old, with a total of 16 seats available. To qualify for the program, families must meet specific criteria, including falling below federal poverty guidelines. Importantly, the center will also consider applications from homeless or foster children, as well as those with special needs, regardless of their economic status.

Additionally, families who receive benefits from programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) may also be eligible for the childcare services, ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it most. The program will focus on providing not only safe care but also enriching educational activities and nutritionally balanced meals for the children.

JWCC is leasing a space beneath the learning resource center to PACT, with construction to be undertaken by local contractor John Petty and Sons Construction Co. The overall project cost is estimated to be slightly below 0,000, an investment that will have lasting implications for the community.

Educational Opportunities for JWCC Students

A unique aspect of this childcare center is its potential role as a lab school for JWCC students. With 84 students currently enrolled in early childhood education programs at the college, the center will provide an invaluable hands-on learning experience. JWCC students will have the opportunity to observe and engage in real-world childcare settings, bridging the gap between theory and practical application.

Sara Mixer, the Executive Director of PACT for West Central Illinois, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with JWCC. “This partnership aims to address what some have referred to as a ‘childcare desert’ in our community. Both organizations have put in significant effort to enhance educational opportunities and support for students on campus, and we are excited about the future,” Mixer noted.

A Focus on JWCC Students

One of the most significant benefits of this new childcare center is the priority it will offer to JWCC students. Ensuring that parents who are also students have access to childcare services will empower them to pursue their educational goals without the stress of unreliable care for their children.

Looking ahead, President Renfro shared optimistic timelines for the project. “We hope to commence construction next week, and our goal is to officially open the center by mid-January,” he stated.

Conclusion

The establishment of this childcare center is a positive step towards alleviating the challenges faced by current and prospective JWCC students. By providing accessible, quality childcare, this initiative addresses both educational and community needs, promising to foster a brighter future for families in the Tri-States. As construction gets underway, the community eagerly anticipates the many ways this center will enrich the lives of both children and their parents. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project!
