The rapid growth of electric car ownership is leading some drivers to want to boost their EV skills.

New research by the AA has found that two-fifths (44 percent) of qualified drivers would like lessons on using an electric car.

The survey suggests that younger drivers are even more keen. Almost half (49 percent) of those aged 18-24 would be interested in learning how to use an EV.

More than 13,000 AA members were surveyed about their views on electric car ownership and driving.

Of all the regions across the UK, Londoners were most likely to want to learn more about driving an EV. The AA notes that the recent expansion of the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is likely to be responsible for the increased interest.

As the UK moves towards the 2030 deadline for the ban on petrol and diesel cars, the AA believes more needs to be done to promote information on EVs.

In particular, the AA would like to see the Highway Code updated to reflect the growing number of electric cars on the road.

Charging up the learning curve

Mark Oakley from the AA Driving School said: “As we head towards 2030, more and more learners will be starting their driving life in an EV.

“Terminology like charging and range will be second nature to them, but it is a learning curve for drivers who have been used to combustion engines for decades

“We know there are lots of myths and misconceptions about driving EVs that are stopping some drivers from making the switch.

“Having the opportunity to take a lesson with an instructor in an EV could be a really useful way for many drivers to overcome their concerns and see that driving an EV is a great option for them and the environment.”

From March 2022, the AA Driving School plans to add a number of electric vehicles to its fleet. Pupils will be given the option to learn in a Peugeot e-208 or e-2008, along with the Vauxhall Corsa-e.
