ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Tuition at Newfoundland and Labrador’s only university will more than double for new students from the province beginning in the fall of 2022.
Memorial University president Vianne Timmons and the school’s vice-president of administration and finance made the announcement today, saying the changes come in response to significant funding cuts by the provincial government.
Memorial University has traditionally had some of the lowest tuition rates in the country, with students from Newfoundland and Labrador this year paying about $255 per course and students from the rest of the country paying about $330 per course.
Beginning in September 2022, that special rate for Newfoundland and Labrador students will disappear, and they’ll pay the same as students from the rest of the country — $600 per course, or about $6,000 a year, with an increase of about four per cent each subsequent year. International students beginning studies in September 2022 will see rates increase from $1,146 per course to $2,000 per course, also with an increase of four per cent per year.
Timmons says she expects a 20 per cent decline in new undergraduate enrolment in response to the tuition hikes, but said even with the increases, Memorial University will still have the cheapest tuition in Atlantic Canada.
