Days after passing the one-year mark of COVID-19 reaching Alberta, the province will provide an update about the pandemic Monday afternoon.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro and Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, are expected to update the province with the latest on the pandemic at 4 p.m. Monday. You can watch the news conference here live.

Friday, March 5, marked the one-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case reported in Alberta. Since then, Alberta has confirmed 135,537 cases of COVID-19 and nearly 2,000 Albertans have died.

An estimated 300 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by the province on Sunday, including 54 cases of COVID-19 variants. The province said more specific online case counts weren’t available on Sunday because of system upgrades.

The province’s online COVID-19 statistics will be updated on Monday.

As of Saturday, there were 4,649 active cases of COVID-19 across Alberta, with 247 people current hospitalizations linked to the pandemic, 42 of which were in intensive care.

Alberta has so far administered 290,391 COVID-19 vaccine doses with 90,397 Albertans fully immunized with both doses.

Last week, the province announced it would expand its COVID-19 vaccine roll out to include people under age 75 beginning March 15.

Last week the premier announced if vaccine shipments arrive as scheduled, all adults in the province will receive their first dose of the vaccine by the end of June.

Albertans who were born in 1957 will be able to book appointments to receive the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine beginning on March 10. Those born between 1958 and 1971 will be able to book vaccine appointments as well in the following days as long as the provincial supply lasts.
